TLOU2 moved to using actual facial performance capture, so they had to redesign the model to rig it for that, and in doing so decided to make her facial structure a little closer to Ashley Johnson's to make facial mocap simpler and more accurate. The effect on the face is really just due to being closer or further away.įirst game didn't use facial performance capture. The different focal lengths do different things to faces, it’s called compression even though that’s not really what’s going on. The image on top looks more like it was captured by moving a 35mm focal length closer to Ellie’s face to get that exact shot, and the bottom looks like it was taken on a 75mm or even 85mm with the camera further away. Longer focal lengths tend to create a shallower depth of field, which is basically the range of focus along the z-axis. A 75mm focal length from the same distance shooting the same subject will capture their shoulders and head in frame, maybe even less. Let’s say your subject is a person standing five feet away, a 35mm focal length will probably capture their torso and head in frame. The larger number the further away the lens is from the sensor, and the greater that distance the more the lens is amplifying something further away from the sensor. Focal length is a measurement that tells you the distance between the lens and image sensor on the camera.
